March 2020 – Brunna Kato

Our March 2020 Contender of the Month of the Brunna Kato! It’s been exactly a year since Brunna began boxing with us, and it’s been brilliant! Brunna bolsters our community with her brightness, bravery, and beautiful spirit. And man, can she box! Here’s what Brunna had to say about her experiences boxing:
How long have you been boxing?
Around 7 years ago, I practiced boxing for the first time in Brazil. It lasted a couple of months, and it was enough to make me fall in love with the sport.

I’m super excited for being Contender of the Month this March as it is my 12th month at Contenders. I can’t believe it’s already been a year since my first trial week!

What made you want to start boxing?
  1. I’ve always admired the agility, coordination and heart of boxers.
  2. It’s an excellent cardio exercise.
  3. Boxing is convenient, you can practice anywhere with or without equipment. Your own body is the only thing you need for training.
Which is your favorite class at Contenders, and what do you like about the class?
I definitely love all the 6 AM classes. You can go everyday and the class will always be different than the previous ones. There is no boredom at Contenders.

Long combo Fridays have a special place in my heart. The first time I had this class I panicked. I didn’t show up for the next 4 Fridays, until Yo calmed me down and encouraged me to show up on the next one. I did and I don’t regret! Every Friday I learn to appreciate a new combo, I feel amazing and unbeatable when I complete it with no mistakes, and I do my best to help my partner feel the same way. For me Friday is all about self-challenge and partnership.

What is your boxing/fitness goal?

  1. Getting stronger.
  2. Having a better life balance – it used to be more sedentary.
  3. And to keep motivated to do everything else I want to.
What is your weakness with boxing/fitness you would like to improve?
I’m always looking to improve! From techniques to conditioning.
Who is your favorite boxer (pro-boxer, your fellow member, anybody!) and what do you like about him/her?
I don’t keep up with the pro boxing scene as much as I wanted to, but I’ve been watching lots of Ali’s fights. He is definitely one of my favourite boxers and personalities. I love his authenticity and his boxing style. I’m always impressed by his fast feet and his defensive skills.
What do you like to do in your free time other than boxing?
I love playing video games and watching TV shows with my husband, Ricardo. Recently, I’ve been trying to learn how to play drums.

What is your advice for people who are thinking of starting boxing at Contenders?
A quote that I like: “you’ve got to be a beginner before you can be anything else”.
If you have any comments you would like to share with others, feel free to do so!

Thanks to all Contenders staff, you are amazing! Special shout-out to Bernie and Tahir for the dedicated partnership, to Daniel and Martin for all the tips, and to Steve, Jack and John for being so supportive and making my mornings so enjoyable. 🙂
