December 2021 – Mike Murphy

Our December Contender of the Month is Mike Murphy. Mike has been a longstanding member of Contenders and been with us over 5 years now. Mike holds many titles including Irishman, father, and now Contender of the Month. Check out our Q&A with him below, and see how his journey with boxing has evolved.

Q: What level of experience did you have with fitness and boxing before joining Contenders, and what would you rate your skill level at now compared to when you began?

A: So out of shape and zero boxing experience.

Q: Why did you decide to start boxing?

A:Always a fan of the sport and wanted to do something completely out of my comfort zone.

Q: What about Contenders stood out to you?

A: The best level of coaching I have ever experienced. But more than that, the sense of community is outstanding.

Q: What are both your short term and long term fitness goals, and how has Contenders helped you in achieving them?

A: I lost 25 lbs this year and I put it entirely down to contenders. I really enjoyed sparring this year and look forward to doing it again in 2022 and giving it  proper go.

Q: What helps you stay yourself motivated in your fitness journey?

A: It’s great to reach your fitness goals but it feels better that there’s always something new to learn.

Q: What challenges do you face in boxing? How do you work through them?

A: I feel no matter how long I’ve been a member, it still feels like it’s outside my comfort zone. I try not to overthink things. Just show up, try your best and ask questions.

Q: At Contenders, what is your favorite class to take? Why?

A: Love all the classes but lately, the lunch time training camp. Purely due to the intensity of the classes. Burning so many calories makes me feel far less guilty about those pints of Guinness.

Q: How has staying active helped in other areas of your life?

A: Contenders’ classes have helped me with all aspects of my life. More energy at work and way more energy chasing my toddler around the house!

Q: If you could give a piece of advice to someone thinking about starting boxing, what would you say?

A: Don’t compare yourself to anyone and just enjoy the journey. No matter how much you learn, the journey never ends so just enjoy the process.

Q: How has your outlook of boxing changed over time?

A: Completely. When I started I always put limits on myself. Whether it be my age, experience, fitness etc… But coming down, feeling welcome and just enjoying myself, Contenders has given me the confidence to set goals with the belief that I can reach them.

Q: …And lastly tell us something people would be surprised to learn about you?

A: When I first moved to Canada, my first job was Debt Collector. I wasn’t very good at it.
