December 2022 – Samir Navarro
Congratulations to Samir, who is December’s Contender of the Month! What a way to finish the year!
Samir has been with us for about a year, and always brings a hardworking and friendly attitude to class.
Check out our Q and A with him below.
Q: Tell us about how you began coming to Contenders, and why you started boxing?
A: Boxing fan since the days of De la Hoya and have always wanted to try it.
Q: What is your favourite thing about being a Contender?
A: Practice makes perfect. And I try to be consistent every week.
Q: You are very consistent in coming to class. How do you stay motivated in your boxing journey?
A: There’s a competitive vibe in Contenders and I don’t want to fall behind.
Q: What is your favourite class to take, or if you don’t have a favorite class what class is the most challenging?
A: Advanced Boxing. There is much more to boxing than just punching a bag. And to quote Chong Li from Bloodsport, “Very good, but brick not hit back”. So in Advanced boxing, you really get a sense of what it feels like to jump in the ring.
Q: What advice would you give to someone new to boxing?
A: Be patient and take it slow.
Q: Do you have any specific goals you are working towards either in boxing/fitness or life?
A: Improve my cardio and, of course, try to knock down a bag.
Q: Besides boxing, what do you enjoy doing?
A: Eating junk food.
Q: …And lastly, tell us something people would be surprised to learn about you?
A: I don’t know how to use chopsticks.
