Tell us about your teaching philosophy. Who were your mentors and biggest influencers?
My biggest influence was my first coach Lloyd. He was such a positive change in my life that I have made it my life’s work to do the same with others. My philosophy with training is to bring your best and I will be happy. In a lot of gyms I knew growing up, it was all about the top fighters – they were the only ones who got coaching. When we opened Contenders I wanted to do that for everyone, so the fifty year old woman who has never boxed before would get the same level of attention as a young champion. We want to create an atmosphere where everyone understands that it is ok to fail, because if you are scared of failing you will never expand your ability.
Learn. Train. Contend. What does this mean?
Come down and give it your all. There is a place for you. For some that might be “I just want to learn a new sport”, or “I want to get in best shape of my life”, or they might have dreams of boxing glory. We will be there to help you in wherever your boxing journey takes you.
How has boxing helped you?
For me, I started boxing at a young age and it was the best experience of my life. It allowed me to travel the country and, in a small way, the world. It taught me how to set goals and work towards them, how to dream big, and to learn to accept failure. But most of all it gave me purpose.
Tell us something we don’t know about you.
If I am not in the gym you will find me out on the mountain bike racing my friends down the trail.
