February 2021 – Bernie Hui

Our Contender of The Month for February 2021 is Bernie Hui who has been training with us for a little over 2 years. When we had to suspend our high-intensity group classes back in November due to the Provincial Health Order, Bernie shifted his focus on really improving his technique instead of relying on his strength to power through combinations, and has made a tremendous progress. We are very proud of Bernie for his hard work, and hope he will keep up the good work!

Here is the Q & A with Bernie.

Q: What made you want to join Contenders/start boxing?

A: It was totally random!  While attending my daughter’s fundraising event at her preschool, one of the items available for purchase was a Contender’s trial pass. I figured, what the heck!  Let’s give it a shot.

Q: Had you done boxing prior to joining Contenders?

A: Nope. Zero experience.

Q: What do you like about doing boxing?

A: I love boxing because it is part mental, cardio, strength training and technical skills development. The combination of these parts result in an amazing workout. It forces you to push yourself and to keep improving on each area. Also, the physical and mental toughness you develop from training will translate into other aspects of your life.

Q: Which is(are) your favourite class(es) at Contenders, and what do you like about them?

A: I really enjoy the 6am class.  It is good blend of technical training with boxing workouts and is always different each time. I never know what to expect coming into class and that keeps it challenging!

Q: What is your goal with boxing/fitness you are working to achieve?

A: Just keep on showing up to class and never stop learning and improving.  Keep on training and see where it takes me.

Q: What is your weakness with boxing/fitness you would like to improve?

A: I am not an athletic person and before joining Contenders, I was not very active at all. Many years of working behind a desk and physical neglect contributed to a weak lower body. Boxing requires good balance and footwork and I hope to improve these areas.

Q: What/who inspires you to continue coming to the gym and work hard?

A: The 6 am morning crew!  Their positive energy and support is what I look forward to. Watching everyone getting stronger and better motivates me to keep on training.

Q: What do you do for a living?

A: I work as an IT Consultant.

Q: What do you like to do in your free time other than boxing?

A: Bike riding and spending time with my dog and kids.

Q: What is your advice for people who are thinking of joining Contenders?

A: Just try it out! The instructors and members are very supportive. I discovered boxing late in life and it was out of my comfort zone in the beginning. Also, do not be discouraged when making mistakes in class.  I do my fair share of mistakes in every class!  It’s how you learn and makes you better at the sport. Just keep on showing up to class, keep at it, and be patient. For me, joining Contenders was life changing!

Q: Do you have any comments/stories you would like to share with others?

A: Contenders has done so much to accommodate us members during the pandemic and we really appreciate it. They made it so easy to attend sessions (in person as well as Zoom) during these crazy times. Thank you, Contenders’ staff, as well as Yo and Sebastian for your teachings! …And big thanks to the 6am morning crew!
